Despite our reduction in plastic bag use since 2002, Australians officially still use 4 billion plastic checkout bags a year. Figures given to Do Something! by a supermarket
whistleblower indicate that we’re actually using more than 6 billion plastic bags every year.

Now that a number of States and Territories have moved to ban plastic bags, action group Do Something! is calling on the Prime Minister to implement Labor’s 2007 promise to bring about a national ban on plastic checkout bags.

Action group Do Something is backing Target’s national decision to ban the bag. Starting on 1 June, every Target store will stop the giving away of plastic checkout bags. The bold move will result in 100 million less plastic shopping bags going into landfill and the environment.[+]
