During the transition phase, many retailers were successful in introducing plastic bag alternatives to their customers without inconvenience.

Target and Target Country stores in South Australian stopped providing customers with plastic checkout bags from 1 December 2008. Instead customers were offered a range of alternatives including different-sized reusable and compostable bags.

On 14 November 2008, Kangaroo Island went plastic bag free for a day. Almost all retailers on the Island supported the initiative, which helped educate local shoppers about the impending ban and their alternative options.

Lush undertook a national campaign in July 2008 encouraging customers to use a canvas tote bag for shopping instead of plastic bags. In-store displays provided information about the campaign, which included a petition to the Environment Protection and Heritage Council to ban plastic bags.
