What is banned/allowed

Posted: 27.04.09  |  Created by:

The ban prohibits retailers from selling or giving away plastic bags with handles made of polyethylene polymer less than 35 microns thick – the typical plastic checkout-style bag.

The only compostable or degradable bags that are allowed are those that comply with Australian Standard AS4736-2006. Note that bags marked ‘100% degradable’ may not actually meet the required standard - these bags will not be allowed.

The following will also be allowed:

  • paper bags
  • compostable bags that meet the Australian Standard
  • barrier bags - the type dispensed from a roll to hold items such as losse fruit and vegetables
  • heavier style retail bags (boutique bags)
  • sturdy bags designed for reuse such as 'Green Bags'
  • bin liners for purchase.
