The following ideas will help council efforts to tackle the plastic bag problem:

  • first off, councils can work with local community groups, retailers and the media to ensure that your community is ready for a plastic bag phase-out
  • give away reusable bags and paper bags in your community - councils and community groups have given away over a million reusable bags and paper bags in recent years
  • get your Mayor or council Recycling Officer to front a local community campaign to get rid of plastic bags. Make them the community 'face' of your initative and get other well known locals to help out too
  • design a poster for your community that can be put up in local retail outlets
  • run an ongoing campaign in partnership with your local newspaper - get readers to send in their own tips for living without plastic checkout-style bags
  • do a 'Coles Bay' and get your local community and retailers to go plastic checkout bag free.
